Medical Marijuana Evaluation
At Parkland Medspa & Wellness Center, our medical director Dr. Bradley Drury will be performing medical exams to determine the appropriateness for patients seeking medical weight loss. In Florida, a medical exam for marijuana involves an in-person visit with a state-certified doctor who reviews your history, performs a physical, and confirms you have a qualifying debilitating condition (like cancer, PTSD, MS, chronic pain). This exam determines if medical cannabis benefits outweigh risks, after which the doctor enters a recommendation into the state’s Medical Marijuana Use Registry (MMUR), not a physical prescription. You’ll need ID and medical records, and follow-ups are required regularly, with renewals often allowed via telehealth after the initial in-person meeting.
What the Exam Covers
- Medical History Review: Your doctor checks your overall health and specific conditions.
- Physical Exam: A hands-on assessment is required for the initial certification.
- Condition Assessment: They verify you have a condition on Florida’s list (e.g., Epilepsy, PTSD, Cancer, ALS, Chronic Pain).
- Risk-Benefit Analysis: The doctor decides if marijuana is a reasonable treatment for you.
Before Your Appointment
- Gather Records: Bring your medical records documenting your qualifying condition.
- Proof of ID: Have your government-issued ID and proof of Florida residency.
After Your Exam
- OMMU Registration: The doctor submits your certification to the Office of Medical Marijuana Use (OMMU).
- Card Application: You then apply for your actual Medical Marijuana Use Registry (MMUR) ID card.
- Dispensary Access: Once approved, you can buy from licensed dispensaries.
Key Requirements
- In-Person First: Initial certification requires a face-to-face exam.
- Qualified Physician: Must be a doctor registered and trained in medical cannabis.
- Regular Renewals: Re-evaluations are needed periodically (e.g., every 7 months), with renewals sometimes via telehealth.
